Barbara is a retired school psychologist who enjoys spending time with her beautiful family and lives an active lifestyle. She loves technology and uses a smart watch to track her heart rate. Using the watch, she noticed her heart rate sporadically increase. Barbara became concerned and called her cardiologist to schedule a virtual appointment to get to the bottom of her symptoms. Her cardiologist prescribed her beta blockers, but her heart rate was still rapid. After research, the doctor prescribed Barbara BodyGuardian® MINI PLUS which was near real-time monitoring and sounded very reassuring!
The MINI PLUS’ compact size enabled Barbara to keep up her active lifestyle. She was able to go on long walks, shower, play golf, and go about all her daily activities. “I didn't even notice I had it on to tell you the truth. As a woman, I had to be a little bit more careful about what clothes I was wearing,” says Barbara. Her friends did not even notice she was wearing a heart monitor.
Ten days into her monitoring journey, she was returning something at a store and she received a call from her daughter. Her daughter was worried because both Preventice and the doctor’s office were trying to contact Barbara. Earlier that afternoon, her heart had paused for approximately 5 seconds. “I knew something happened because of these incidents of rapid heartbeats. I started to feel a little bit faint. ‘Am I going to pass out?’ The feeling would go away and come back once or twice, but I never passed out. So I knew that the pause had happened a couple hours before. And it was probably the worst one that I had because I did feel like maybe I will pass out this time. I didn't feel my heart stop. I felt my heart racing again. In retrospect, you don't feel your heart stop, but you do feel it try to kick back into some kind of a rhythm,” shares Barbara.
Her cardiologist recommended a procedure as soon as possible and suggested either a Pacemaker or an ablation. Fortunately, Barbara is in great shape and is recovering smoothly from her ablation. She is very thankful that the near real-time monitor saved her life. “I'm really happy that I wore the MINI PLUS. If I would have worn another heart monitor, I would have needed to wait 30 days for the study to finish. Then, send the device back to the company and wait for them to send a report to my doctor. In all that time, I would have had episodes where my heart stopped. So, what I felt previously was exactly what I felt the day that the monitor was on. And, it was a pause, a significant pause. Who knows what would have happened,” says Barbara.
As she reflects on her journey, she feels so fortunate. “I could've been in the car when my heart paused for longer and been in a horrible accident or something else. It never got to that point,” shares Barbara. “I'm very relieved that it's behind me and I'm on the other side of this now.”
