“I hardly ever noticed it. It just kind of sat there on my chest and I didn’t really feel it.”

Living life to the fullest is an important goal for the Sweeney family. They have seen the twists life can take and they want to make sure they have no regrets.

Paisley Sweeney is 13 and enjoying life and competition as an athlete who loves swimming, running and cross training. As a member of an adventurous family she puts her heart to the test every day and has benefitted from the Preventice BodyGuardian® MINI remote heart monitor which gives her physicians a better understanding of her heart rhythm allowing them to make sure her heartbeat continues to be strong and steady.

The Sweeney family journey changed course four years ago when Tiffany, mom of six, including daughter Paisley, experienced sudden cardiac arrest while she was swimming. Tiffany survived and has since learned she has a rare, genetic arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

Given genetics that run in the family, all of the six Sweeney kids went through testing and they found Paisley carries the same genetic mutation as her mom. While this isn’t fully conclusive as to whether she’ll have the same cardiac challenges as her mom, monitoring is critical to watch for the signs and symptoms.

In the winter of 2018, Paisley started having some dizzy spells while she was swimming and exercising. Following a check in with her pediatric cardiologist to discuss her symptoms, it was decided that she needed remote cardiac monitoring to see what was going on with her heart when she was experiencing the symptoms.

When presented with a couple of options, Paisley worked with her doctor to get the MINI remote cardiac monitor. As you’d expect from the name, the MINI is small and it’s also waterproof. It is placed on the chest with an adhesive that is designed to be gentle to the skin and can be moved and reapplied to certain areas on the chest that are best for monitoring her heart while she’s going about her daily activities – even swimming, running and cross training.

“Our cardiologist told Paisley, ‘I want you to push as hard as you can when you have the monitor on. We really want to work your heart to see if we can reproduce the symptoms and figure out what's going on with your heart.’ The monitor was very easy to use. It was discreet, and it did do what it said it was going to do, actually capturing her heart rhythm while she went about her activities,” said Tiffany about her daughter’s heart monitoring experience. “It gave me peace of mind to know that we had that piece of technology in place.”

Paisley commented on the size and comfort of the MINI, “I hardly ever noticed it. It just sat there on my chest and I didn’t feel it.”

What gave her the most hope was that the BodyGuardian® MINI remote cardiac monitor could help them, “get to the bottom of what was causing my symptoms and knowing that I’ll get answers at the end,” said Paisley.

“I'm really grateful for the technology that allows you to get a clearer picture of what your heart rhythm is doing,” said Tiffany.

Paisley is under the care of an electrophysiologist, a cardiologist specializing in heart rhythms, and a team of healthcare providers to provide the monitoring she needs to make sure they detect changes with her heartbeat, especially when she’s experiencing symptoms. They keep an open dialogue with their healthcare team, as well as their coaching staff who are familiar with her situation. There is also some assurance that comes with having an automated external defibrillator (AED) available at the pool where Paisley swims should she ever need it.

To date, Paisley’s monitoring session with the BodyGuardian® MINI remote cardiac monitor did not reveal anything concerning even when she put her body and heart to the ultimate test competing in in the butterfly at a swim competition. They are relieved to know her heartbeat remained strong and consistent. They are also glad to know the MINI remote cardiac monitor is available for additional monitoring as she grows and continues her journey as an athlete.

Paisley’s advice to others who might be using remote heart monitoring technology to figure out symptoms related to their heartbeat, “Try to be patient and wait for the answers. It's hard, but it's worth the wait to know what's going on with your heart and this technology makes it easier.”

“I think through the whole journey, our biggest take away is to try to live your best life now, no matter what your circumstance is,” said Tiffany. “Do what you're passionate about. Make the intentional choices towards what gives you the fullest life, no matter what. For us, that's what makes life great.”
